Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can be caused by many endocrine and metabolic causes.  Because hypertension does not usually cause symptoms, nearly 1/3 of patients with elevated blood pressure may not know it.

The World Health Organization estimates that hypertension leads to 7.5 million deaths, about 12.8% of the total of all deaths worldwide
(http://www.who.int/gho/ncd/risk_factors/blood_pressure_prevalence_text/en/)

Elevated blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart
disease, can worsen diabetic complications, and can cause damage to
the kidneys and eyes.
